{'I could have killed them' - Lawson encounters dangerous incident with F1 track officials
Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson disclosed he narrowly avoided a life-threatening accident during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when a pair of track officials crossed the track immediately ahead of his car
The concerning event occurred on the third circuit when marshals were seen on the racing surface as Lawson was rejoining the race following an quick visit to the pits to change his compromised front wing
Racer's Instant Response
Immediately after, the Formula 1 racer Lawson spoke to his team engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Did you witness that? I nearly... ended their lives"
"I genuinely couldn't process what I was seeing"
"I came out on a new set of hards, and then I got to Turn One and there were just two guys dashing across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, truthfully, it was incredibly risky"
Track Safety Questioned
"Obviously there's been a failure in communication somewhere but I've never experienced that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"
"We can't understand how on a live track track officials can be authorized to just run across the track in that manner. I have no idea why, I'm certain we'll get some form of reasoning, but it really can't happen again"
Governing Body Reviewing
F1's overseeing organization, the global motorsport federation, is thoroughly reviewing the circumstances
"Following a turn one incident, race control was notified that fragments were located on the track at the critical section of that bend" stated the governing body
"During the third lap, marshals were alerted and put on alert to go onto the racing surface and clear the fragments once the entire field had cleared the area"
"As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had pitted, the orders to send personnel were rescinded and a safety warning flag was displayed in that area"
"The examination is ongoing what happened after that point"
